After a fire or flood it is frequently not possible to stay in the building at all. Furniture, appliances, and personal belongings have to be taken out, sorted, and loaded into containers so that the site can be cleared and restoration can start.

What Happens to Your Belongings

Damage Assessment

The crew walks through the building and evaluates how severe the damage is. Walls, ceilings, and load-bearing elements are checked for stability. A preliminary list is drawn up, separating items that can be saved from those that are beyond repair. This assessment shapes the plan for everything that follows.

Site Protection

Before anything is moved, broken windows are boarded up and compromised roof sections are covered with tarps. Electrical and gas lines are shut off if they have not been already. The point is to keep out rain, wind, and anyone who should not be on the property.

Packing and Loading

Items are wrapped in a soft cloth or bubble wrap, then covered with stretch film, with cardboard protectors placed on the edges. Fragile pieces go into individual boxes with foam inserts. Everything is labeled with an inventory number and the name of the room it came from.

Cleaning and Deodorizing

At the storage facility, soot and smoke residue are cleaned off each piece. For lingering odors an industrial ozone generator is used. Ozone gets into fabric, wood grain, and hard-to-reach crevices, breaking down the molecules that carry the smell of smoke.

Building Restoration

While belongings are in storage, the property itself is restored. This can include anything from drying out water-damaged walls to replacing burned framing and drywall, depending on how much of the structure was affected.

Return and Setup

Once the building is ready, items are brought back and placed in their original rooms according to the inventory. Each piece is checked against the list. If any damage occurred during storage or transit, a separate report is prepared for the adjuster.
