Furniture, appliances, and personal belongings have to be taken out, sorted, and loaded into containers so that the site can be cleared and restoration can start. Each item is cleaned, labeled with a sticker, and wrapped in protective material. Larger pieces are disassembled where possible. Everything goes to a climate-controlled facility with round-the-clock surveillance, where it stays until the property is ready for move-back. ## What Happens to Your Belongings The fire itself is only the beginning. Once it is put out, the property owner is left with smoke-damaged furniture, water-logged floors, and a structure that may not be safe to occupy. Items left inside continue to deteriorate from humidity, soot deposits, and temperature swings. Handling all of this on your own… A trained crew takes care of the sorting, packing, and transport of belongings while working alongside insurance adjusters and restoration contractors. Every item is photographed and entered into an inventory list. Items that cannot be restored are documented separately for the adjuster's report. #### How We Handle the Pack-Out ### Damage Assessment The crew walks through the building and evaluates how severe the damage is. Walls, ceilings, and load-bearing elements are checked for stability. A preliminary list is drawn up, separating items that can be saved from those that are beyond repair. This assessment shapes the plan for everything that follows. ### Site Protection Before anything is moved, broken windows are boarded up and compromised roof sections are covered with tarps. Electrical and gas lines are shut off if they have not been already. The point is to keep out rain, wind, and anyone who should not be on the property. ### Packing and Loading Items are wrapped in a soft cloth or bubble wrap, then covered with stretch film, with cardboard protectors placed on the edges. Fragile pieces go into individual boxes with foam inserts. Everything is labeled with an inventory number and the name of the room it came from. ### Cleaning and Deodorizing At the storage facility, soot and smoke residue are cleaned off each piece. For lingering odors an industrial ozone generator is used. Ozone gets into fabric, wood grain, and hard-to-reach crevices, breaking down the molecules that carry the smell of smoke. ### Building Restoration While belongings are in storage, the property itself is restored. This can include anything from drying out water-damaged walls to replacing burned framing and drywall, depending on how much of the structure was affected. ## Related - [Water Damage](https://waterdamagerepaircarlsbad.com/water-damage-restoration/) - [Fire Damage](https://waterdamagerepaircarlsbad.com/fire-damage-restoration/) - [Mold Damage](https://waterdamagerepaircarlsbad.com/mold-remediation/) - [About Us](https://waterdamagerepaircarlsbad.com/about-us/) - [News](https://waterdamagerepaircarlsbad.com/news/) - [Reviews](https://waterdamagerepaircarlsbad.com/reviews/)
